Water Filler Interface Signals: Supplier Handover Checklist

For a filler connected to existing equipment, request a signal schedule that explains what each side sends, receives and does next. “PLC interface included” is too vague to allocate wiring, software or test responsibility. Keep this review focused on the machine handover.

01

List the required process states

Ask the responsible engineers to agree the actual signals needed, such as ready, run permission, bottle shortage, blocked discharge and fault. These are examples to review, not a universal control specification.

  • Signal name and meaning
  • Source and receiving equipment
  • Expected response and status indication
02

Document the implementation boundary

Record signal direction, connection or protocol, normal state and required response when the connection is lost. Name the party providing sensors, terminals, cable, software and documentation.

  • I/O list or protocol mapping
  • Electrical/network requirements for qualified review
  • Responsibility and version references
03

Separate process coordination from safeguarding

Ordinary run/stop information must not be assumed to perform a safety function. Have qualified engineers define and validate any safety-related interface separately, with its own design responsibility and records.

  • Process handshake specification
  • Safety-interface scope where applicable
  • Approved restart and recovery procedure
04

Witness a cause-and-response test

Use the agreed test procedure to verify each interface and record the result. Where factory equipment simulates the buyer's machine, label that limitation and repeat the required checks after installation. Resolve disputed stop ownership before accepting performance.

  • Input condition and observed response
  • Tested software/hardware revision
  • Deferred site tests and sign-off owner

Questions and answers

Is a shared PLC brand enough for integration?

No. The interface still needs signal definitions, supported connections, software ownership, failure behavior and an agreed commissioning test.

Should every stop automatically restart the line?

The responsible engineers must define permitted recovery for the actual equipment and risk assessment. Do not infer restart behavior from a generic signal list.

What belongs in the supplier quote?

The interface schedule, supplied hardware/software, excluded work, drawings, test scope and a named owner for each side of the handover.

Next procurement decision

Map the existing interfaces before a replacement machine is quoted.

Send elevations, space, utilities, controls, surrounding equipment and the available shutdown window.
